Visiting OMS and Compact Compositi
Avigliana and Ferriera (TO, Italy) -
29th October 2008
These two small factories, located in the surroundings of Torino, represent an excellence in their own field: OMS is specialized in high – tech light alloys and metal machining while Compact Compositi is engaged in production process involving composite materials.
In the morning, at OMS, many technological processes involving high precision machining and dimensional controls were showed: the leading thread of the entire tour was a wide variety of aerospace applied products manufactured in the plant (such as vacuum pump, turbine elements, rotor blades and many others).
After lunch, the afternoon was devoted to an interesting visit at the Compact
Compositi factory, a little gem in composite materials application; besides
of a large amount of high technology products developed inside (prototyping
of bodyworks, chassis, bobsleigh and many others), students were offered
the opportunity to attend the different phases featuring composite production
process, starting from the lay – up of glass and carbon fibers cut from
prepreg layers up to vacuum bagging and autoclave curing necessary to get
the finished product.
Furthermore the “Millennium Master” aircraft, a brand new general aviation
airplane featuring a primary structure completely manufactured in carbon
fibers, was presented to the visiting group by the creators of the project,
who were our tour guides during the whole afternoon.
